I own two businesses. The first is a product development company building software products. The second is a service company that works on houses. Over the past year-and-a-half, I worked on a house across the street from a house formerly owned by one of the two founders of Black & Decker. The other house is formerly owned by the founder of Head, Howard Head.
While out working on the Head house, the current owner told me that Howard was an aeronautical engineer that applied his engineering skills to design a new ski that was durable and less than half the weight of existing skis at the time. He was able to get some notable professional skiers to use the skis and the company became wildly successful. Howard used the proceeds to buy a house in Towson, Maryland with a very large tennis court he had custom made. One problem, he was not very good at tennis. So, he designed a better tennis racket with a larger head ad a ‘sweet spot’ that made it easier to hit.
It was extremely interesting to learn that I did work on the tennis court that was the genesis of the Head tennis racket. You can learn more about Howard Head here.
