2021 Cicada – Brood X

They are coming. Not sure what to expect but it will be interesting. I am not sure why but I really can’t remember much about the 2004 uprising.

Up to “1.5 million” cicadas per acre are expected. Every year I see cicadas but different cicadas have different years. This year, May is going to be busy. Scientists from University of Maryland say that they think the cicadas have some kind of metabolic clock tied to the nutrients in the plant roots they feed on. They spend sixteen years feeding on the roots of those plants, boring holes underground and right now they are building escape chambers so they can emerge just when the temperatures are ideal for them to mate. Must be pretty uncomfortable when they are down there in the ground when it is frozen.

Maryland is right in the mix. This is a video about 2004.

My guess is it will be pretty busy.
